How can I protect my software IP as an independent entrepreneur?

I’m the only person working on and owning a big project that I’ve been developing for over a year. No one else can claim any ownership of it. I’ve been divorced, and the legal papers clearly say my ex doesn’t own anything related to my property. No NDA’s are involved. What’s the best way to protect my software IP? A patent is off the table for some reasons. How do I keep others, like big corporations or government, out of my business?

For context, the project is called ‘Looking glass to infinity fractal art prints.’

Talk to a patent attorney, don’t rely on advice from this forum.

I’m a bit confused. When you say ‘Big brother,’ are you worried about the government taking your work? And why are you ruling out a patent? Some software can’t be patented, but others can. If you share more details about your project, it’ll be easier for people to help. Regardless, you should definitely talk to an attorney rather than relying on advice from this forum.

@Rin
Last time I checked, software patents can be really tricky. They’re expensive, and even more costly if you want to expand internationally. Unless you have investors or buyers, getting a patent doesn’t make sense because it’s a big financial risk without a guaranteed return. I’m sure any attorney would tell you the same thing.

@Jin
What makes software patents so tricky for you? Yes, they can be costly, but if you’re serious about your business, it might be worth it. Without some legal protection, like a patent, it’s going to be tough to find investors or buyers. You should definitely talk to an attorney about it.

The best advice I can give is to speak to an attorney about your options.
