Non-Profit Selling My Donated Food – What Would You Do?

Hey guyz…
I run a catering and meal prep business, and whenever we have extra food, we donate it to a local non-profit. We thought they were using it for one of their community programs, but today I found out they’ve been selling the food we donated! They’re using an app where people buy mystery bags of food for a set price. We actually sent an employee to buy one, and the whole meal was food we donated yesterday!

On one hand, we gave them the food without any strings attached. But on the other hand, this non-profit is run by a family, and I know they pay themselves a salary (found that out in a separate conversation). Now I’m wondering if our donations are just padding their bottom line instead of helping people in the community.

My business partner doesn’t think it’s a big deal since the money is still going to the non-profit. But I feel like it’s kinda shady they didn’t tell us they were selling the food. Plus, they haven’t mentioned our donations on social media or given us any shout-outs, even though we’ve been promoting them.

Any advice on how you’d handle this? We’re definitely not donating to them anymore, but should I take any further action, or just let it go? Thanks in advance

Hey folks, your actions can make a difference. By addressing the issue directly and responsibly, you help protect the integrity of the non-profit sector and ensure that donated goods are used as intended.

Address the issue directly with the non-profit. Clearly communicate your concerns about the food being sold without your knowledge. Review any donation agreements. Consider finding a new recipient for your extra food.

Protect your business reputation and ensure your donations are used as intended.
