Can anyone help me? I'm lost here

Hey everyone, I know this might get ignored, but I really need advice or help. If you see this, please share your thoughts. It’d mean so much.

Here’s the story: I started a small company about 11 months ago. It’s been slow, but I’ve been working hard to grow it. Money’s tight, so I plan every dollar carefully. I had a friend who also had a business. He showed me pictures, followers on his company’s page, and we talked a lot. I even helped him with ideas for his website.

My company does websites and graphic design. Later, he suggested a partnership between our businesses. I thought it was a basic deal, but instead, his parent company needed a $1,200 deposit (later raised to $1,500). He promised I’d get it back in 60 days. He also said I’d earn $8,000 and other small amounts for speaking on behalf of his company. It sounded good at the time, so I paid him the $1,500, even with a $300 late fee.

Then it got weird. He said my company’s ID number was fake. I showed him my legal paperwork, proving it wasn’t. He said his parent company’s lawyer was scamming them and wanted us to sue her. He asked for $5,000 cash, promising we’d get $14,000 back by summer. I didn’t trust it and called him out. His emails were fake, and my girlfriend even found the logo he used on a template site. When I confronted him, he claimed he’d lost $5,000 himself. Then he disappeared for two months.

By August, he still owed me the $1,500 deposit. He ignored all my questions about what he wanted for his website. I even tried using his travel agency to book flights. The tickets were overpriced, not what he promised, and the refund was a non-cash credit I can’t use. In September, he promised to pay me back from his first big paycheck, then blocked my number. Now he’s telling mutual friends that my company is fake.

I’m stuck. I barely have money for lawyers. My wedding is in three weeks, and I don’t know what to do. Any advice or ideas would help so much.

Just a heads up, this forum is for small business advice. If your post doesn’t follow the rules, it could get removed. Make sure you’ve asked a clear question or shared what kind of help you’re looking for.

Here’s a short version: The person who posted this got scammed by someone pretending to be a friend. They asked for upfront payments for fake partnerships and services, then blocked them after getting the money. Now they’re stuck, trying to figure out how to recover the funds and protect their reputation.

@Finnick
Thank you for breaking it down like that. I appreciate it so much!

Take this to small claims court. Bring every bit of proof you have—texts, emails, bank records—and file the case yourself. You don’t need a lawyer for small claims, and you can sue for the maximum allowed.

General rule for businesses: people should be paying YOU for services, not the other way around. Be cautious next time.

This is a lot of information. What exactly is your main issue, and what outcome are you looking for?

Honestly, you got scammed. It’s a tough lesson, but I think you’ll have to move on. Going to court could cost more than it’s worth.

Also, paying a service like LegalZoom doesn’t make you a business expert. Next time, learn more before diving in.

@Poe
But isn’t using LegalZoom to set up an LLC pretty standard? I thought that was legit.

This! OP, you’ve got to develop better instincts. Maybe consider finding a mentor who can help guide you on decisions like this in the future. Good luck!

Not sure what anyone here can do to help. Have you considered seeking legal advice?

I don’t even know where to start. Any recommendations?

Sorry this happened. How did you meet this guy?

Just a tip: try breaking your post into paragraphs next time. It’s hard to read when everything’s lumped together.

Fair point, but formatting issues happen sometimes when posting. It’s still worth addressing the content.

I really just need help figuring out what to do now. Any advice?

This person scammed you. Stop giving them chances, and consider either moving on or taking legal action.

Are you sure this person was really a friend? This sounds like a long con. You might want to report this to the police or just move on and learn from the experience.

Looking back, I don’t think he was a real friend. It hurts because I knew him for years, and he even asked me to be in his wedding.
