Is anyone else feeling anxious about putting so much into their business when everything seems so uncertain right now? I’m in my first year running my business, and while I love what I’ve built so far, it’s still not profitable yet. With everything going on politically (looking at you, new US administration), I’m starting to doubt the future of my business. My product is something people ‘want’ but not necessarily ‘need’, and I’m worried that in the face of all this uncertainty, I might not be secure, both personally and professionally. Anyone else going through this or have any advice?

Part of running a business is learning how to adjust when things get tough. If tariffs are added, you’ll be facing challenges just like everyone else. But at least with your own business, you get to control your own path. A regular employee doesn’t have that advantage.
@Penn
True! At least with your own business, you can make decisions and steer it where you want to go, even if things get rough. Way better than getting laid off and having no control over it.
It’s hard to give advice when the situation is so broad, but good luck! Hopefully things work out for you.

I get what you’re saying, I just had to vent a little. The main concern is the financial side. If there are trade wars, Canada could get hit hard with a recession. It would also raise living costs in the States, making things even tougher for a lot of people. Plus, with AI development speeding up, I worry that many jobs might disappear—what happens to people’s income in a future like that? Do you think businesses like mine, selling home fragrances, stand a chance in such an uncertain future?
@Orion
Honestly, I’m not sure what home fragrances are exactly, but there will always be a market for luxury products, especially among the wealthy. And there will be cheaper options for people who want to feel like they have something nice. The one thing I’d avoid is relying on the middle class, though. It’s been tough for a while now, and it’s probably going to get worse.
If you’re running a small business, you shouldn’t worry too much. Large companies get affected by big economic shifts, but smaller ones tend to be more adaptable and less dependent on the bigger picture. It really comes down to your customers.
You should really stop watching the news if it’s making you this anxious. If you’re letting the possibility of things going wrong in the future get to you this much, maybe business isn’t the right path for you. I’ve been in business for a long time. Recessions happen. It sucks, but it’s no reason to quit. In fact, while others are scared, that’s when you can find ways to turn things around for your business. Don’t let fear stop you from moving forward.
I always remind myself during tough times that not all businesses will fail. Some will, but others will thrive. If you keep pushing and stay flexible, you could come out on top. Stay adaptable, and this situation might actually help your business in the long run.
I get where you’re coming from, but you asked for someone to talk you off the ledge, so here goes: as entrepreneurs, we’re creating something new, not just following the same path others have taken. There’s so much negativity and fear in the world right now, but that’s exactly why people like you, building businesses, are so important. You’re taking a chance, you’re being brave. And even if your business doesn’t grow the way you want, that’s okay. The fact that you’re trying, and believing in something you love, is already a big accomplishment. Keep going, you’re doing great.
Wait, you’re worried about tariffs shutting down your business? But all these political issues in Canada—like taxes and housing problems—don’t affect your business at all?

It’s kind of naive to think that tariffs won’t affect businesses in some way. It’s pretty likely that they will.

Yeah, pretty much every business is going to feel the effects of tariffs one way or another. It’s just part of the game.
Remember, administrations come and go. If things don’t go well, they won’t last forever. Also, the US isn’t the only market for your product. There are plenty of other places you can sell to. Don’t let one country’s politics limit your view.
When life feels overwhelming, it’s a good idea to focus on what you can control. There’s no use stressing over things you can’t change. If things get tough, you might just find opportunities you didn’t expect. The important thing is to take care of yourself, physically and mentally. Make sure you’re eating well, sleeping enough, and giving yourself a break from social media. That might help you clear your head and focus on growing your business.
